While touring schools and libraries, I asked children what kind of stories they wanted me to write. I heard them all, and I listened. Well, here you go for those who want to see boys on the cover and read longer stories!
Meet Jamal, a thoughtful and determined nine-year-old boy living in the heart of the inner city. With bright, curious eyes, Jamal has a sharp mind and is strong-willed. Even with this, he often feels like a fish out of water in his bustling neighborhood, where noisy activities make it hard for him to sleep at night and even harder to concentrate during the day.
This heartfelt story follows Jamal, who dreams of escaping his rough neighborhood to avoid the crime surrounding him. However, his parents are deeply rooted in the community's rich culture and are hesitant to leave.
Jamal's father, who lost his childhood best friend to gun violence, helps Jamal navigate his fears and curiosities about their neighborhood's past. Through engaging and poignant storytelling, "It's Rough Out There" highlights the challenges and beauty of inner-city life. With his parents' guidance, Jamal learns to see the good in his community and discovers its strength, resilience, and beauty.
Follow Jamal on his emotional journey as he learns valuable life lessons and discovers the true meaning of courage. Whether you live in the city or the suburbs, "It's Rough Out There" is a must-read for everyone.
For those living in the suburbs or other areas far removed from inner-city struggles, "It's Rough Out There" offers a window into a world that is often misunderstood or oversimplified. It provides an authentic portrayal of life for youth living in rough neighborhoods. This perspective is crucial for fostering empathy and breaking down stereotypes, a task that we all have a role in, regardless of our location.
